Saint Bernard

About Saint Bernard Dogs And Puppies:

The Saint Bernard is a breed of very large working dog from the western Alps in Switzerland, Italy and France, originally bred at the Great and Little St Bernard Pass]for rescue. The breed has become famous through tales of alpine rescues, as well as for its enormous size.

Appearance:

The St. Bernard is a giant dog, with the largest individuals reaching over 140 kg (310 lb). The average weight of the breed is between 65–120 kg (140–260 lb) or more and the approximate height at the withers is 70 to 90 cm (28 to 35 in).

Coat:

The coat can be either smooth or rough: the smooth coat being close and flat; the rough being dense, flat, and more profuse around the neck and legs. Typically a red color with white, or a mahogany brindle with white. Black shading is usually found on the face and ears. The tail is long and heavy, hanging low.

Face:

St.bernard has massive head and is powerful. The muzzle is short, wider than it is long. The teeth meet in as scissors or level bite. The nose is broad, with wide open nostrils, and like the lips is black in color. The medium sized eyes are set somewhat to the sides and are dark in color. The medium sized ears are set high, dropping and standing slightly away from the head.

Behavior:

Known as a classic example of a Gentle Giant, the Saint Bernard is calm, patient and sweet with adults, and especially children. However St. Bernards, like all very large dogs, must be well socialized with people and other dogs in order to prevent fearfulness and any possible aggression or territoriality.
